14 Game Facts

Hello, happy Wednesday! Exactly two weeks until Halloween! That’s why I decided to tell you 14 game facts. Here goes nothin’!

  1. The longest recorded played game of UNO lasted 3 hours and 10 minutes.
  2. Monopoly was literally a lifesaver in World War II. The Nazi army allowed the British government to send games to their POW soldiers. With the cooperation of the game’s publisher, the Brits hid real money within the stack of Monopoly money as well as compasses, metal files and a folded silk map. (Because silk wouldn’t disintegrate like paper. The soldiers were able to use those supplies to flee from the POW camp.
  3. Monopoly: Marvin Gardens doesn’t exist. It was supposed to be Marven Gardens but it was a typo that was never fixed.
  4.  Jenga is Swahili for “Build”
  5.  Talking is not permitted during a game of Chess. “Check” is not required. Only “Checkmate.” when the game is over.
  6. All the Scrabble tiles ever created would fit around the Earth 8 times.
  7. There are Dora The Explorer and Spider-Man versions of Chutes and Ladders now.
  8. The phrase “back to square one” likely originated from Chutes and Ladders.
  9. A woman created Candy Land for children recovering in a hospital but later sold it to Milton Bradley.
  10. The longest game of Monopoly lasted 70 days and they played for 54 straight hours.
  11. The longest game of underwater Monopoly lasted for 45 days.
  12.  Backgammon originated in Persia over 5,000 years ago.
  13. Senet is the oldest known board game, found in Predynastic and First Dynasty burials in Egypt from 3100 B.C.
  14. The name tic tac toe comes from a game by the same name, no longer played, in which players with their eyes closed tossed a pencil down onto a slate marked with numbers, and earned the score the number indicated — something like blind darts. The game dates back to the mid to late 1800s.

  1. These are very interesting! Number 9 is my favorite. We had a game called Mall Madness when I was younger and played it so much! My mom kept it and a few years ago gave it to me. I still play it with my daughter. 🙂

    1. I love number 9 also! I’ve never heard of Mall Madness! Sounds fun! I am crazy about games but sadly I have nobody to play them with, and thankfully sometimes I play UNO with my mom. I’ve learned to play games with myself.
